Vantagens:

O forro de gesso possui uma montagem rápida e fácil;

O forro tem a característica de conferir simetria e linearidade aos ambientes, valorizando o projeto arquitetônico;

Com o forro de gesso é possível criar sancas que valorizam a estética do forro;

O projeto de iluminação é muito beneficiado pelo uso do forro de gesso, pois com ele é possível criar efeitos de luz muito interessantes;

A manutenção do forro de gesso é fácil e, em caso de necessidade, é possível recortar uma parte do forro e emendá-lo novamente sem prejuízos ao acabamento;

O forro pode ser colocado sob lajes ou sob telhas;

A espessura fina do forro permite um ganho na área útil do ambiente. Estima-se que para cada 100m² existe um ganho de 5 m²;

Desvantagens:

Uma das principais desvantagens do forro de gesso é sua baixa resistência à água. O mínimo contato já é capaz de danificar a placa. Por essa razão, ele não deve ser utilizado em áreas externas ou ambientes úmidos (salvo em casos em que se utiliza placas de drywall resistentes à umidade). Goteiras no telhado também podem danificar o forro;

O forro de gesso é mais frágil quando comparado a outros materiais, como a madeira. Existe um limite máximo de peso que o forro pode suportar por metro quadrado. Por isso, ventiladores de teto podem não ser uma boa ideia nesse tipo de forro, por exemplo;

O forro de gesso pode amarelar ou mofar com o tempo, especialmente o forro em placas.
